Description

The Anubis was an accident. Named in part for the nominal mythological link between her and the Prometheus and also because she was, in the opinion of many who worked on her, the proverbial final word on heaven or hell, she was originally built to be used as a test bed for the saucer section of the USS Prometheus, utilising an adapted drive section from an Akira Class heavy cruiser. She fulfilled this role perfectly. However, by the time that the Dominion War began the Prometheus herself was constructed and tested, incorporating the latest in weapons and propulsion technology. This left little real purpose for the continuing use of the Anubis, and she was retired in space dock, presumably never to be crewed again.
When Starfleet began suffering heavy losses to Dominion forces plans were made to dismantle the Anubis and to use her operational parts for repairs on ships returning from the front lines. She was boarded and undergoing systems checks when a Dominion task force comprised of Jem'hadar attack ships, battle cruisers and Galor Class destroyers invaded the star system. With barely enough Starfleet vessels in the area to repel the task force the Anubis was called upon to defend the helpless ships currently under construction until help arrived. She performed this task admirably.

Having done so well in the engagement, with only ten photons aboard and operating at a mere 70% of her normal efficiency, Starfleet Command took under consideration the possibility of employing vessels with the Anubis general designs and capabilities. They decided to keep the Anubis herself in active service as the NX 79656 until such time as her ad hoc design could be reviewed. When the Advanced Starship Design Bureau completed their overview they recommended several changes to the ship. Firstly, while the Anubis was to lose the saucer separation capabilities This freed up a considerable amount of internal volume, as there was no longer a necessity for a separate warp core or nacelles within the primary hull, or for impulse engines in the secondary hull. This space was given over to provide room for the Type X and Type U phaser arrays that would make up the saucers armament. The possibility of incorporating Type XII arrays was considered, but a combination of a reduced role, the end of the Dominion War and a greater need for greater warp streamlining meant that the Anubis saucer section would be decreased in size from the scale of the Prometheus, an overall reduction of approximately 25% that would not allow for the heavier armament. The Anubis primary hull would now measure only 140 meters long instead of its original length of over 200 meters.

The ships phasers, although not as powerful as her larger sisters, are superior to those deployed on comparable vessels built and run by other Alpha and Beta Quadrant powers. They provide the Anubis with a superb firing arc overall, although their effectiveness is somewhat reduced in the aft quarter. While four large arrays arm the saucer section (two ventral and two dorsal) there is only a single array employed below the shuttlebays facing aft. This gives it a good field of view. The final two phaser arrays are on the nacelle support pylons. The diminutive size of these weapon installations means that only short but rapid or lengthy but deeply separated bursts of phaser fire are possible. To cover the blindspot directly in front of the ship, two Type U pulse phasers were installed in the forward section of the saucer, filling an area originially designated for the auxilliary deflector (which would have been used in seperated flight mode).

The Anubis torpedo armament was reduced accordingly, and would have been close to nonviable if not for the addition of an external launcher system similar to those used in Miranda and Akira designs. Placed on top of and forming a significant section of the engineering section, the Anubis launchers are of the same make as the Defiants. Ten torpedoes can be fired forward in the space of five seconds before reloading becomes necessary, while only five torpedoes can be launched aft wards in the same period of time. The Anubis drive section, initially a full copy of the Akira but without the connecting struts, eventually became a single structure with the starships two warp nacelles spanning out and back from just below the weapons pod.

The Anubis defensive systems are similar to those employed on the Prometheus Class vessels, but once again on a slightly smaller scale. The Anubis ablative armour is not as dense and her shields are only 80% as effective as her sister ships. This situation would have been worsened if not for the incorporation of a warp core into the Anubis that was proportionally more powerful than the primary core used in the Prometheus. This new core provides the Anubis with enough power and energy to sustain its relatively combat intensive systems while at the same time retaining its high warp capability.

Armed with her Type X phasers and the latest in photon and quantum weaponry the Anubis serves well as a skirmisher against multiple smaller craft or singular larger vessels. She does not, however, possess the necessary firepower or stamina to take on anything the size of a Dominion battlecruiser or a Vorcha Class attack cruiser unaided. This corresponds with Starfleet's primary need for the Anubis; she is to be used as a replacement for the ageing Miranda's still in use. Just as the Miranda's operated as smaller, less capable counterparts to the Constitutions, Starfleet Command wanted this role to be filled by a vessel that had the same capabilities relative to the latest ships of the line being produced after the Dominion War. As successful as the Miranda's were, their achievements in terms of sheer numbers and longevity have not yet been matched by the Excelsior-variant Centaur or the Galaxy-variant Nebula, which were either too few or too resource intensive to be pushed into wide scale production. The Anubis design suited Starfleet perfectly. She was small, fast and powerful, capable of acting as an effective deterrent on the Federations borders with the Romulans, the Cardassians and the Breen as well as other powers. Although not as easily constructed as a Defiant, the Anubis has a higher turnover rate than the Prometheus and Akira Class starships, superior even than the Miranda's rate of construction in the 2200s. The relative ease with which these ships can be produced and fielded was a significant beneficial influence when it came time for Starfleet to give the design the go-ahead for fleet wide distribution, beginning with a limited number but gradually working up to high numbers between 2378 and 2415, with an expected output in peacetime of 18 a year.
