Description
With new technologies and classes being brought about by the other local powers, such as the Klingons, Romulans, and especially the Cardassians, Starfleet wanted to completely modernize it's fleet with ships that could handle nearly any task from scientific to combat to exploration or even diplomatic missions. The Admirality contracted a team of experienced scientists and engineers to develop a new family of ship classes, which would trace their roots back to the Constitution class. Since the Constitution had long been retired, and the almost century-old Miranda and the aging Constellation would soon be obsolete, Starfleet set the project in motion.
The program was created to construct a new era of starships, but the technology was fairly new and unknown, so Starfleet didn't want to risk contracting too many new classes, in case the designs didn't work. After the great success and unpredicted effectiveness of the Galaxy and Nebula, Starfleet began production of yet another class, the Cheyenne, which would take on the role of the Constellation, being a small ship with a high power-output, designed for long duration or highly power demanding work.
Starfleet had no trouble finding a team of engineers to begin developement of the Cheyenne-Class project, since there were many Constellation CO's and experts which were still living, and the engineers from the Galaxy project had just become available. Starfleet assembled a team that began work immediately, and in 2359, just two years after the Galaxy had been launched, work on the Cheyenne began.
Production moved along quickly, with the two totally different groups of engineers working together exceptionally. Since the technologies from the Cheyenne's larger siblings was already tested and proved effective, the Cheyenne project was used to capitalize on the efficiency of already existing systems and technology, rather than inventing new ones, an approach that had proved effective with the Constellation. The most noticeable and unique trait of the Cheyenne is its unique nacelle design, which arose from the demand for a more effective successor of the Constellation. The four nacelles were designed to increase the power output of the ship rather than raise its top warp speed. Because the Galaxy-style warp nacelles weren't designed to handle the added stress of heavy duty work from such a small ship a new nacelle was created, which most noticeably had a flat front and less rounded edges, but internally the nacelle was designed to more effectively handle the power-flow from the warp core. The new design worked and satisfied all of the requests from Starfleet, but was not used in later classes because its design wasn't meant to exceed warp 9.2.
After a relatively short amount of production time, just 8 months including testing programs and correcting design flaws, the USS Cheyenne was launched. It was an instant success in its duties, and Starfleet could safely retire the Constellation class, although many were still kept to work as tugs or in war games.
